About this calculator

Variability Index measures how smoothly power was delivered across a ride by dividing Normalized Power by average power, and coaches use it to tell a steadily paced flat time trial apart from a criterium or hilly road race full of natural surges and accelerations.

A well-paced time trial typically keeps VI under about 1.05, while events with repeated attacks or short climbs push it noticeably higher; riders compare VI across past rides to track how consistently they’re able to hold pace over time.

This calculator takes your average power, Normalized Power and FTP, and returns your VI, Intensity Factor, TSS and a pacing verdict.
