About this calculator

The 20 m multi-stage shuttle run (the “beep test”) estimates aerobic fitness without lab equipment by having you run back and forth between two lines 20 m apart, keeping pace with a progressively speeding audio signal until you can no longer keep up — the level and shuttle reached at that point maps to an estimated VO2max via validated regression tables (most commonly the Léger equation).

Sports teams, military and police fitness testing, and school PE programs use the beep test because it requires nothing beyond a flat 20 m space and a recording, making it far more practical for testing groups than treadmill VO2max testing, while still correlating well enough with lab-measured VO2max to be used for fitness benchmarking and squad selection.

This calculator takes the level and shuttle number you reached and returns your estimated VO2max using the standard beep test conversion tables.
