About this calculator

Exercise physiologist Jack Daniels developed the VDOT system, published in Daniels’ Running Formula, to estimate a runner’s aerobic fitness from a single race result rather than requiring a lab test. It works by first computing the oxygen cost of running at the race pace (via a velocity-based VO2 formula), then figuring out what percentage of VO2max that effort represents based on how long the race was sustained, and dividing the two to back out an equivalent maximal VO2max — reported as the VDOT score.

Because VDOT is derived from an actual race performance, it reflects current fitness better than an age-based or resting-heart-rate estimate, and running coaches use it to prescribe training paces (easy, marathon, threshold, interval, and repetition pace all scale off the same VDOT number). This calculator takes a recent race distance and finish time and estimates your VDOT and VO2max; it is not medical advice.
