About this calculator
The Cooper Test, developed by Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper for the US Air Force in 1968, estimates VO₂max — the maximum rate at which the body can consume oxygen during intense exercise — from the distance a person can cover running for exactly 12 minutes. The standard formula is VO₂max (ml/kg/min) = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73, derived from Cooper's original correlation between field-test distance and lab-measured oxygen uptake.
Because it requires no equipment beyond a track and a stopwatch, the Cooper test became one of the most widely used field tests for aerobic fitness, adopted by military services, police and fire academies, school physical education programs, and endurance coaches as a low-cost substitute for treadmill VO₂max testing. It remains a standard benchmark for comparing cardiorespiratory fitness across large groups.
This calculator takes the distance you covered in your 12-minute run and returns your estimated VO₂max, letting you track aerobic fitness gains over time or compare against normative fitness tables.
