About this calculator

Unlike time-based MET calculations, this calculator estimates running calorie burn from distance alone, using research showing that the net energy cost of running is remarkably consistent per mile regardless of pace — widely approximated at roughly 0.75 calories per kilogram of body weight per kilometer (close to the popular “100 calories per mile” rule of thumb for a runner around 70 kg / 155 lb). This holds because running economy studies (going back to work by exercise physiologists like Pete Cavanagh) find that a heavier runner burns more per mile mainly because they’re moving more mass over the same distance, not because pace changes the equation much.

This distance-based method is particularly useful for training and nutrition planning where the number of miles is the fixed, known quantity — a marathon training plan built around weekly mileage totals, or a runner estimating carbohydrate needs for a 20-mile long run — rather than duration, which varies with pace and terrain. It gives a more stable estimate than the time-based approach for exactly this reason: it doesn’t need you to know or specify your running intensity level at all.
