About this calculator
An even pace strategy means running every kilometer or mile of a race at the same speed, derived simply by dividing total goal time by total distance — the pacing approach most exercise physiologists and coaches recommend over positive splitting (starting fast and fading) because it avoids the early glycogen depletion and lactate buildup that come from starting too aggressively.
Race analytics from major marathons consistently show that runners who hold an even or slightly negative split (second half faster than the first) tend to record better finishing times than those who fade in the back half, which is why pace bands, GPS watch alerts, and printed pacing charts built around a constant per-kilometer or per-mile split are standard tools at marathons, half-marathons, and track workouts.
This calculator takes your total distance and goal finish time and returns the exact constant pace per kilometer and per mile you need to hold throughout.
