About this calculator

SWOLF (a blend of “swim” and “golf”) scores swimming efficiency the way golf scores a hole: lower is better. It is simply the number of strokes taken to cover one pool length added to the time in seconds that length took, so SWOLF = strokes + seconds. Just as in golf, the goal is to minimize the number, which rewards swimmers who glide farther per stroke rather than just swimming faster by thrashing harder.

Swim coaches and triathletes track SWOLF trends across a set or a season because it separates technique from raw effort — two swimmers can post the same lap time, but the one with the lower SWOLF is covering the distance with fewer, more efficient strokes. Wearables like Garmin and pool-deck touchpads popularized the metric because it gives swimmers instant efficiency feedback without needing a coach to count strokes poolside.

Enter your stroke count and time for a pool length and this calculator adds them together to give you your SWOLF score.
