About this calculator

Swimmers train and race by pace per 100 meters rather than raw speed, because pool sessions are naturally broken into 25m, 50m or 100m lengths. Once you know your pace — say 1:45 per 100m — total time for any distance is just that pace multiplied by how many 100m units fit into the distance: a 1500m swim at that pace would take 15 × 1:45, or 26 minutes 15 seconds.

Coaches build interval sets around pace numbers derived from time trials or a swimmer’s Critical Swim Speed (CSS), and swimmers use the same math in reverse to predict finish times for target events — a 400m freestyle race, an open-water mile, or a triathlon swim leg — before ever getting in the water. It’s also how pace-clock workouts are planned, since knowing exact target split times lets a swimmer judge whether they’re on pace mid-set.

Enter your pace per 100m and your target distance, and this calculator gives you the total swim time you should expect, plus the split times along the way.
