About this calculator

Under U.S. federal law (the Fair Labor Standards Act), most hourly, non-exempt employees who work beyond 40 hours in a workweek must be paid overtime at time and a half — 1.5 times their regular hourly rate — for every hour worked beyond that threshold, and some states set stricter daily overtime rules on top of the federal weekly one.

The calculation itself is simple multiplication: overtime hours times the hourly rate times 1.5, but getting the base hourly rate right matters, since it must include the employee's regular rate of pay, which can incorporate certain bonuses or shift differentials, not just their base wage. This calculator takes your hourly rate and the number of overtime hours worked to compute the time-and-a-half pay owed for that period.
