About this calculator

This calculator splits a shared tip pool proportionally by hours worked rather than evenly by headcount: each person's share is calculated as (their hours ÷ total hours worked by everyone) × total tip pool. This ensures someone who worked a full 8-hour shift receives more than someone who only covered 2 hours, even though both contributed to the same shared pool.

Restaurants, bars, and other tipped-service workplaces that pool tips across a shift — rather than letting each server keep their own tips — commonly use hours-based (rather than equal-split) distribution as the fairest method, and many state labor regulations around tip pooling explicitly reference proportional distribution by hours or shifts as an acceptable, defensible method. Shift managers use this calculation at the end of a shift to divide cash tips among the staff who worked it.

This calculator takes the total tip pool and each coworker's hours worked (up to three people), then returns each person's proportional share, so tips are split fairly by time on the clock rather than by number of people.
