Tip pooling combines all the tips collected during a shift into a single pool that is then redistributed among staff, commonly weighted by hours worked rather than split evenly — this differs from “tip sharing,” which allocates a smaller fixed share to support roles like bussers or bartenders. In the US, tip pooling arrangements are subject to Fair Labor Standards Act rules about which employees can be included.

This calculator divides the total tip pool proportionally by each staff member’s hours worked, so someone who worked twice as many hours in the shift receives twice the share of the pooled tips.
