About this calculator

The torr is a pressure unit defined so that standard atmospheric pressure equals exactly 760 torr, making it essentially equivalent to a millimeter of mercury (mmHg) — the unit is named after Evangelista Torricelli, inventor of the mercury barometer. The millibar, one-thousandth of a bar, is the everyday unit of meteorology (equivalent to the hectopascal, hPa, used on modern weather charts).

The two units are common in different fields — torr dominates vacuum science and lab equipment specs (turbo pumps, vacuum chambers, deposition systems), while millibar/hPa dominates weather reporting and barometric pressure readings — so converting between them, using 1 torr = 1.33322 mbar, comes up whenever the two contexts meet, such as reading a vacuum gauge against sea-level atmospheric reference.
