About this calculator

The Bishop score is an obstetric scoring system that adds up five components of the cervix — dilation, effacement, station, consistency, and position — each rated on its own point scale, to give a total that usually ranges from 0 to 13. It was devised by Dr. Edward Bishop in 1964 to predict how ready the cervix is for labor.

Obstetricians and midwives use the score before scheduling a labor induction: a higher score, generally 8 or above, suggests the cervix is favorable and induction is likely to succeed, while a low score often points toward a cervical ripening agent first. This calculator adds your entered component scores and gives the corresponding interpretation, though it is not medical advice and any induction decision belongs to your care provider.
