About this calculator
This calculator estimates EV charging time as battery capacity in kilowatt-hours divided by charger power in kilowatts, then adjusted for charging efficiency — typically 85–95% because energy is lost as heat during AC-to-DC conversion inside the car's onboard charger (DC fast charging skips that conversion and is more efficient). The three real-world charging tiers behave very differently: Level 1 (120V household outlet, ~1.4 kW) can take over two days for a full charge, Level 2 (240V home or public chargers, ~7–11 kW) typically takes 4–10 hours, and DC fast charging (50–350 kW) can add 80% in 20–40 minutes, though the charging curve tapers sharply above 80% state of charge as the battery management system protects the cells.
EV owners use this to plan overnight home charging or road-trip fast-charging stops, apartment dwellers use it to judge whether a shared Level 2 charger is fast enough for their commute, and fleet managers use it to schedule depot charging around vehicle duty cycles. Enter your battery's kWh capacity and your charger's kW rating to get a realistic charging estimate.
