About this calculator
Critical Swim Speed (CSS) approximates a swimmer’s aerobic threshold pace — the intensity that can theoretically be sustained indefinitely before fatigue accumulates rapidly — without needing a lab test. It is calculated from two timed swims, typically 400m and 200m: CSS = (400m distance − 200m distance) ÷ (400m time − 200m time), which isolates the swimmer’s sustainable speed by removing the anaerobic contribution that inflates pace over the shorter distance.
The concept, developed from research by physiologists including Sam Skiba, plays the same role in swimming that functional threshold power (FTP) plays in cycling and critical velocity plays in running — a single number coaches use to set precise, individualized training zones for threshold sets, interval work, and race-pace prediction, rather than relying on generic pace charts that ignore a swimmer’s actual physiology.
Enter your times for a 400m and 200m swim, and this calculator derives your CSS and your equivalent pace per 100m.
