Swim pace is conventionally normalized to a standard distance, per 100 meters or per 100 yards in yard-based pools, because raw swim times aren't directly comparable across different total distances the way running pace per mile or kilometer is; this calculator takes your actual distance and time and scales the result to what your pace would be over exactly 100 meters.

Swim coaches build interval sets around per-100 pace because pool workouts are structured in repeats of standard distances, 100s, 200s, and so on, and a normalized per-100 figure lets a swimmer compare effort and progress across a 400 m time trial, a 1500 m distance set, and short sprint repeats using one consistent unit, the same way running coaches use pace-per-mile across races of different lengths.
